Box of Noise
Box of Noise are a punk band we were introduced to by the internets newest buzz MySpace! We liked what we heard so hears an interview to give you a little introduction to them…
You’ve been around 15 years, played with loads of great bands, but I’ve only just found you
through MySpace. Give us some history on the band, what have put out, how you got started, etc.?
Box of noise started as a group of friends in the early 90’s. We all had a passion for music and soon developed our individual musical talents. The name Box of Noise came from the diversity in the group. Everyone in the band had different influences ranging from Miles Davis to Bad Brains. The name just fit us. As we grew and matured, some of us had priority changes and family obligations that led to some member changes in the band. The band also went through two name changes before returning to the original Box of Noise. In short, we are just a bunch of guys who love to make music and play shows and if we were to get signed that would be a great bonus!
If you were reviewing a Box of Noise live show, what would you say?
We would be our own toughest critic, I think it would be fair to say that those attending the show have an awesome time. The music is energenic and fast. If you enjoyed the old school shows, Box of Noise would be a must see for you. The pit is always flowing and people have a great time.
What are the 3 best things and the 3 worst things about being in a band!
The three best things would be
1.) playing live
2.) Fans, Fans, Fans!!!! They make it possible
3.) Hanging with buds, talking about the good ole days.
The three worst things about being in a band.
1.) Trying to manage our day jobs with shows and practice.
2.) Lack of Money.
3.) family sacrifices.
Any weird, scary or funny tour/show stories? Where was your first show and how did it go…whats been your best show…and your worst?!
One show will answer three of your four questions! Our very first show was at the Power Station in Melbourne Florida. In the middle of the set, the guitar amp went haywire and was making horrible sounds. The guitar player tried in vein to get the sounds to stop but got pissed off and threw his guitar at the back wall. The rest of the band was kinda at a loss of what to do. Funny thing is, the crowd thought is was part of the show and had a great time anyway. It is hard to answer what has been our best show because we have played with some of our biggest heros and they were great to us, but to pick one, it would have to be when we opened up for DRI. The crowd was going off, the pit was insane and we got to shoot the shit with DRI.
What do you do away from the band – zines, other bands, college, work, etc.?
Shawn is a manager at the U.S. post office, Heath is retired army, Vern is the owner of a carwash, and Roger is a roofing tech. That is what we do for work but in play we are all avid fishermen.
What’s your 5 favorite albums?
1.) Fugazi – Repeater
2.) Dropkick Murphy’s – Gang’s all here
3.) Bad Brains – any if their albums
4.) UK Subs- Live in Holland
5.) Dead Kennedys- Any of their albums
If you could collaborate with any artist, living or dead, who would it be with and why?
Iggy Pop. He help cultivate the underground music scene and helped promote the no rules type of music.
What music did you grow up on? If i was to go through your record collection, whats is the most embarrassing record you own?!
All the great old school punk bands like social D, sex pistols, subhumans, misfits, agent orange, the freeze, DI, DRI, minor threat and many more………..
The most embarrassing thing you would find in my collection would probably be a monley crew album.
Whats your earliest hardcore/punk memory?!
Going to my first punk show seeing GBH and the Accused.
What are your thoughts on Bush, (his re-election, his foreign policy, the situation in Iraq etc.)?
We are not a political band. We each have our own opinions about the current situations. Half of us are Pro Bush, half of us are anti Bush.
Whats coming up for Box of Noise?
We are hoping to have our EP completed by June, with an album soon to follow. We are planning several live shows in central Florida in the near future.
Thanks for the interview, the final words are yours.
We are just a bunch of guys who love making music and hope that people enjoy it.
