You want to introduce yourself?
hello my name is john and im a punk rock alcoholic
How long has Toxic being putting bands on?
3 years with Toxic, personally ive been involved in putting on gigs around 10 years without any formal name.
What got you hooked on the punk life?
Its the only music that has ever meant anything to me, I was also a very violent and out of control teenager so it was only natural i would gravitate towards punk rock ,it was an outlet for my aggression and two fingers to anybody that got in my way parents/teachers/police/authority in general... thankfully im much calmer these days ...putting on gigs is my outlet now.
Whats your earliest punk memory?
Starting secondary school in 1981 and everybody seemed to be a punk or a skinhead/bootboy, I was fascinated with the spiky coloured hair and the ripped clothes even though i hadn't a clue what it was all about till '83 when i was hooked for life, this was in the days before school uniforms were compulsory so everyone was going into school with bondage pants/safety pins and ripped clothes/14 hole doc martens.........teachers couldn't understand it I think punk was indirectly responsible for bringing in school uniforms.
You've also got Toxic Records, with a couple of CDs out, hows that going for ya?
Its going ok the intoxicated compilation is in spain-france-uk-belgium-germany,so hopefully some of the bands on the comp get some positive feedback.
for the Coldwar cd ...at the moment im talking to a few distributors in the uk ,so hopefully ...I think Coldwar are one of the bands that could actually get
somewhere with some money/promotion behind them.
Any releases planned for the future?
Next release is a split cd with LEFT FOR DEAD(uk) and COLDWAR.
Coldwar are off to the USA next week, you must be delighted about that....
Yeah im happy for the lads,I had a 15 date tour of japan set up in february for them but it fell through at the last minute when the arts council pulled the
promised funding ...everyone was disappointed so america will make up for it.I supposed to go with them but it coincides with the HITS festival in blackpool.
I gave them plenty of cd's to sell over there so hopefully it will cover the cost of the next toxic records release
Any disasterous gigs, (power cuts, amps blowing etc.)
shit happens at every gig you just got to deal with it financially disaterous ? yes loads ha ha ! so im gonna do my jello biafra thing now and ask people to send 5 euro to toxic records to fund my appeal against paying the venues/bands i owe money to
What would you say was your favourite gig ?
That i put on ...probably the expolited in vicar street, wattie is still able to show the younger bands what stage presence and energy is all about and hes 45
That i attended SHAM 69 in the brixton academy 1991, absolute mayhem, skrewdriver turned up with a mob of bone heads and the anti fascists skinheads bashed the shit out of them in the pit when they started seig heil. there was about 25 of us that went over from dublin and we got stuck in.I got cs gas in the face, and a bursted lip but it was great fun,
You organised the Dublin HITS, what was it like organising such a big event for 3 days?
A complete fucking headache organising flights and accomodation for 150 people ...never again
There has been a certain "band" talking shit about Toxic, without even knowing you, what do you want to say to these stupid fucks?
I dont give a flying fuck what anyone says about me , I dont have to justify myself to anyone, but if you have a problem say it to my face ,not on a message board behind a faceless pseudoname, give them my phone number and i will me them anywhere to discuss their grievances !!
You've done a load of great bands, Agnostic Front, Dead Kennedy's, Dropkick Murphy's, HITS, some great UK and euro bands, and of course all the locals. Did you ever think in the early days you would make it this far?
No ,it started out as an interest and a love of punk since 1983 ,but after a few gigs i thought why not try do something i love full time ,unfortunately trying to
juggle a family /job/promoting gigs became 24 hours so something had to give ...in the end i gave up a good job to join the unpredictable world of the cut throat music industry....what a mug ha ha !
Is there any band that you would love to put on?
THE CLASH
Not naming any names but is there any band that you wished you hadn't put on ? !
Yes all the bands that i lost money on, JJ burnell from the stranglers was difficult !!!! to say the least.
Any wierd rider requests?
Every rider has weird shit on it .fluffy towels /vitamins etc but one that sticks in my mind was a band that asked for 8 pairs of new socks on their rider ? ,for libel reasons im not gonna tell you who
Whats on the horizon for Toxic...
Hopefully build Toxic up into an alternative for the bigger bands that usually only deal with the corporate promoters in this city, give all my mates jobs, provide
a platform for the good underground bands that get ignored by the press /music industry ,sit in the pub all day drinking ,either that or go back to 9-5 or the dole
And the last words are yours.....
Support the underground scene, Buy me a drink .........
